This is an eleven-minute composite exposure which has been processed with a mild unsharp mask to bring out the faint spoke-like structure within the ring.

Image of Galaxy cluster Abell 2218 by Al Kelly, taken on 5/24/96 with 32" f4 Newtonian and CB245 CCD camera from Danciger, Texas. This is a 21-minute exposure (eighty-four 15-second images) showing about ten foreground stars and dozens of distant galaxies. This cluster was imaged by the Hubble Space Telesope in 1995 as part of a study of the affect of gravitational lensing. See the July, 1995 issue of Sky and Telescope Magazine, page 11, to see the gravitational lens arcs in Abell 2218

Closeup image of the center of Abell 2218 , as captured in the above image on 5/24/96. The arrows point to smudges of light which come from the very distant galaxies which have been brought into "focus" by the gravity of Abell 2218. There are few other amateur photographs of gravitationally lensed objects.
